Biography

I came in serious contact with rum in 2011. I was new in the Job back in the days and after one year I sought something to relax after a hard days-work. I wanted something that could give me a very good olfactory and tasting experience. To let my mind freely wander and to philosophize about the world in its current state of being. I'm living in a region of Germany, which is known for good beer and wine, but I never liked both of them. Whisky? Was too foreign for me back in the days. Tequila? You know Sierra Tequila Silver & Gold? Right. Cognac or Brandy? Not to my liking either. Bourbon? I only knew the cheap ones with Coke. Nothing you would like to remember anyways. So what was left? It was rum. I only knew Cuban rum, and not the best I want to add. My favourite mixer at the time was the Havana Club Añejo 7 Anos (black bottle & label). Easy accessible in Germany. It was not the best but it did it's Job in cocktails. It had flavour. I did never like the rums from Bacardi or Captain Morgan in my youth. But the Havana Club rum was not really enjoyable when I sipped it straight. So I tried a few of the rums from 'Plantation'. At first I was hooked. They were smooth and simple. Enough for me at the time. But I sought something more challenging. Soon I met some guys in a chat and we exchanged our experiences. They talked about some awesome rums and mentioned 'Rockley'. Plantation made massive releases. The turning point was a Single Cask Barbados Rum 15 YO, released exclusively for Belgium. I got my hands on it anyways and was massively disappointed. I finally lost interest in this brand. The rums were getting too sweet for my taste, which had changed, and the prices compared with the delivered quality too ridiculously high. I sought for alternatives. I bought my first two Jamaican 'Indys' and one from Barbados: The Berry Bros & Rudd Hampden Distillery 1990 17YO and the A.D. Rattray Monymusk Distillery 1986 25YO. It was like seeing rum in its natural and best form. But the best of all was the Bajan rum. It was the Cadenhead Green Label Barbados 15 YO. It was a so-called 'Rockley' rum, distilled in 1986. After that experience, everything changed. I went on a journey to discover the real face of rum. Now, after almost 4 years later and rich of experiences, I'm blogging (since 2012) to share my free thoughts and gathered experiences with other rum-enthusiasts, who are sick and tired of this dubious (additive) and sweet business that rum is. I'm writing as a paying customer. I am not an expert. This title offends me for obvious reasons. I earn my money in the German industry. I'm not depended on the rum-business, and therefore, I will write what I think and I will score accordingly.
